More DJing goodness coming your way

by stephanlange on August 10, 2010

Yesterday I showed you the future of the DJ mixpult here and today we are getting blown away by this multitouch-enabled rig by a guy called Gregory Kaufman.

image

It employs a gesture-based interface that lets you spin the virtual turntables and use a variety of taps and finger swipes to replicate the main functions of a regular DJ deck.

It is even big enough so 2 DJs can play at the same time.

The coolest DJ board in the world!

by stephanlange on August 9, 2010

I have a few mates that are DJing and I tell you right now, they would love one of these little screens.

coolest DJ board in the world

A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a guy called Rodrigo from Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, Emulator for Traktor Pro as the DJ software, but not much else. Djs will love this DJ board, but let the video talk for itself.

simply awesome!

My experience with the new Seagate Momentus XT

by stephanlange on August 6, 2010

When I first heard about the Momentus XT I was thrilled and after doing a bit more research (and because I could afford it) I decided to get me one of those.

Of course it wasn’t available in Australia so I had to ask a favour from a friend in the US. I bought it, he shipped it, I got it, done.

After installing Windows 7 on my machine it had been running a hell lot faster already than when it had Vista on it, but I was still eager to see how this hdd will improve it.

So what makes the Momentus XT special?

It is part old fashioned hard rive with spinning platters (fast spinning ones at 7200 rpm) and part SSD (superfast, no moving parts)

image

So the way this hard drive works is to monitor which files and programs you are using the most and once it established that it puts those on the 4GB of SSD it has available for faster access.

My Laptop is nothing special and already over 3 years old (Core2Duo 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM), but the speed increase I got through this new hdd is simple awesome.

so here are some numbers:

Task old hdd 1st time 2nd time 3rd time 4th time
startup * 2min 1min 32sec 59sec 37sec 37sec
hybernate 1min 50sec 23sec 22sec 22sec 22sec
resume * 1min 55sec 27sec 27sec 28sec 27sec
Photoshop 45sec 19sec 6.6sec 4.2sec 4.3sec
Powerpoint 20sec 6sec 4sec 2sec 2sec

* this includes startup, login and opening an explorer window

As you can see especially on the software tests, the times improved the more I used the program and then went static after the 4th time and stayed fast.

I am not a professional lab that does these tests all day long, I just had my Android phone stop watch, so you will have to take these results with a grain of salt.

In Australia you can get them from about $160 – check here

My overall experience with this hard drive was very positive and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a speed improvement on their machine.

Why don’t you slurp it?

by stephanlange on July 6, 2010

this has to be one of the coolest things I have seen all year. I wouldn’t have a clue how this works, but it is awesome – just point and slurp

The camera of the future concepted to you by Canon

by stephanlange on July 6, 2010

I am a keen photographer and over the years I have bought multiple lenses that I always carry around with me on big trips to make sure that I have the right lens for the job.

image

Now Canon came up with a new concept – the Wonder camera

Canon is pretty confident that by then it’ll have figured out how to do a single lens capable of going from macro shots all the way out to a 5000mm focal length. This non-interchangeable lens is backed by an all-touch interface, an extremely high-resolution sensor, and image stabilization so advanced as to make shooting at high zoom range a viable option.

image

The only thing i don’t agree with is the video-only capture. Canon argues you won’t need to shoot stills when its video is capable of keeping everything in focus all the time — you’ll just pick out your favorite scene from the movie reel.

no matter what – I want one!

Here is Canons revelation

Parrot AR.Drone hits the US this September for $299

by stephanlange on June 16, 2010

we have been talking about this over and over again and it finally got announced and the hands on video from the engadget guys wants me to have it even more.

image

If you are listening carefully to the video there is a girl talking about it and if I understood it correctly you can fly one of these for 12 min straight before it needs to get recharged for 90 min – not great, but a good start.

As previously mentioned the drone is controlled via an app for your iPhone,iPod or iPad (and there is an Android one now too) – You get a free download of the control app in the App Store, as well as a simple combat app in which your view on your iPhone is overlaid with missiles, lasers, and explosions as you duel with another Drone.

there are rumours that more and more apps will be released in the future with new “missions” so it will never get boring :-)

I personally can’t wait and I will talk my boss into buying one for the office.

My Gadget wish list for 2010

by stephanlange on May 10, 2010

In my line of work (and because I love it) I come across a lot of cool gadgets and usually (at least if you ask my wife) I spend too much money on them.

So this year I will follow my moms advice and make myself a list.

Usually I start these lists with the least and work my way up to the best, but I want to start with the device I really really want this year.

1. Samsung Galaxy S

I have been using my 8310 blackberry for too long and for a while there I was carrying around 3 devices to do my phonecalls, emails and browsing and gaming, but the Samsung will be able to do all that.

image

So why do I want it?

for a start I don’t like the iPhone (don’t get me wrong I think it is a good phone for “normal” users), but it just doesn’t do what i want from a phone.

apart from that here is my  shortlist on why I want it:

* 4 inch WVGA Super Amoled screen (finally a device i can use outside)
* big (as in big capacity) battery – 1500mAh
* 16GB internal memory + extendable with micro sd
* wireless n
* camera capable of 720p video @ 30fps
* support of MPeg4, H.263, H.264, WMV, RV, DivX, Xvid and MKV – no more converting movies
* Samsung Social Hub – no more opening up app after app after app – I just have it all in one inbox – sweet

2. Tablet

I had a chance to play with the iPad for a few weeks now and I have to say I am not impressed – especially since Apple announced the AU pricing for it today and again, Australia gets screwed – all you really get is a big iPod

so what do I want in a Tablet?

Best Homes of the Year crowned – and I want one

by stephanlange on May 5, 2010

every year for the past 5 years Electronic House has run a contest for the best electronic houses out there. From home theatres to ultra-connected kitchens over 250 projects were submitted and out of 15 categories 43 winners were chosen.

Here are some of my favourites:

Should I buy an iPad?

by stephanlange on April 8, 2010

The hype about the iPad has been huge and Apple sold 300 000 devices on opening day and over 1 million applications have been downloaded already.

Even Amnesia jumped on the band wagon and we are having an internal competition and the first price is an iPad.

So let’s say I won’t be the lucky one winning the iPad, should I go out and buy one anyways?

image

if you read this blog on a regular basis you will know that I  like to look at some things from the funny angle, but at least you know now that the iPad is blendable and it is powered by an iPhone. :-)

We all know that the iPad is not the first tablet on the market and there have been alternatives around for some time now.

take the Modbook for example

image

you provide the unibody macbook to this company and for US$900 they will turn your 2500 dollar macbook into a tablet that runs full OSX with flash and multi-tasking support.

and then there is the Viliv X70 which has been around for over a year now

image

it runs WindowsXP, has GPS, USB, SD card slot and 3G

but if those devices would be the only alternatives I wouldn’t think twice and go straight with the iPad

Fortunately new devices are basically introduced every day so there are more options.

so it looks like that all different Operating systems will have tablets coming out to I will show alternatives based on that.

Steve Balmer showed the HP Slate off and I was excited to see it and couldn’t wait to know more about it

image

so finally there are more details available and on paper it has some advantages over the iPad:

1.6Ghz CPU, 1080p playback, card reader, USB port, 2 cameras, supports flash and multi-tasking

another windows alternative would be the Archos 9 PC tablet

image

Next on the list is Linux and this time the tablet is coming out of Germany and is called WePad (how innovative)

image

coming out of Germany it should be a nice piece of equipment and it has again a few things to offer that the iPad can’t match

larger screen, 2 USB ports, supports all ebook formats, flash support, access to the Android market place

Speaking of Android my next choice is probably my favourite – ICDs Gemini

image

as i said it is running Android OS, has a 11 inch screen which can be resistive or capacitive, a 5 axis accelerometer, card reader, voice calls, SMS, MMS, Wireless N, FM radio, IR, USB port, 2 cameras, GPS, dual speakers and microphones, HD video. email support and flash support

unfortunately there is no release date or price yet, but this little gem looks pretty awesome – there is a great comparison on engadget here

another Android alternative that has been talked about is the Notion Ink Adam

image

Then there is the browser based OS tablet that was born out of controvercy called JooJoo

image

it has a bigger screen, 1 GB of Ram, USB port, flash support and camera, but everything else I read about it didn’t convince me at all – it seems to have early release issues, but hopefully they will be solved with software updates

There are plenty of rumours about Chrome tablets that are coming out – supposedly Google and HTC are working on a tablet based on Chromium

image

all you can really find online are concepts by Google so there are no hardware specs or release dates or prizes

So if I have to sum it up, there are plenty of alternatives to the iPad. For me the ICD Gemini is my favourite at the moment and I would love to get my hands on one to really give it a test drive (ICD if you are reading this, please send one my way)

But of course this is just my opinion and everybody should make up their own mind. I would love to read your opinions so please leave them in the comments below.
