My Gadget wish list for 2010

by stephanlange on May 10, 2010

In my line of work (and because I love it) I come across a lot of cool gadgets and usually (at least if you ask my wife) I spend too much money on them.

So this year I will follow my moms advice and make myself a list.

Usually I start these lists with the least and work my way up to the best, but I want to start with the device I really really want this year.

1. Samsung Galaxy S

I have been using my 8310 blackberry for too long and for a while there I was carrying around 3 devices to do my phonecalls, emails and browsing and gaming, but the Samsung will be able to do all that.

So why do I want it?

for a start I don’t like the iPhone (don’t get me wrong I think it is a good phone for “normal” users), but it just doesn’t do what i want from a phone.

apart from that here is my  shortlist on why I want it:

* 4 inch WVGA Super Amoled screen (finally a device i can use outside)
* big (as in big capacity) battery – 1500mAh
* 16GB internal memory + extendable with micro sd
* wireless n
* camera capable of 720p video @ 30fps
* support of MPeg4, H.263, H.264, WMV, RV, DivX, Xvid and MKV – no more converting movies
* Samsung Social Hub – no more opening up app after app after app – I just have it all in one inbox – sweet

2. Tablet

I had a chance to play with the iPad for a few weeks now and I have to say I am not impressed – especially since Apple announced the AU pricing for it today and again, Australia gets screwed – all you really get is a big iPod

so what do I want in a Tablet?

the OS is not really important for me as long as it does what I need it to do, so here are some key features:

* multitasking
* HD video playback
* video output
* accept my external hdd and other USB devices
* front and/or back facing camera
* access to apps
* ActiveSynch Push email support
* 10 inch multi touch screen

so in my research here and here I have a few options

WeTab

Available for pre-order now and you can find it here

and the Ownta tablet PC from here

those 2 options might not do all of the things I need, but most of them.

I also like the ICD Gemini, but I am having a hard time tracking down the manufacturer or anyone who sells it – if you know, please let me know in the comments

3. Project natal

I had the privilege to be one if the first (at least in Australia) to have a go at Project Natal and all I can say is that it is awesome. the tracking of the body is great, the games are fun and I can see myself using it more than I currently use my Wii.

this trailer is old, but it sums it up pretty well

4. USB 3.0

If you like speed and I do, there is no question that all my new external devices will have to be USB 3.0. Not only will it be backwards compatile with 2.0, it will kick its butt :-)

We are talking 640MB per second of Data transfer speeds

5. SSD

With SSDs it is basically the same as with USB 3.0 – it is all about speed

Just check out this guy doing a few tests on his Win7 machine

6. new smaller/lighter laptop

I got a new bag that I carry around and it is one of those 1 strap over the shoulder ones and my 3 year old HP (around 4 kg) just gives me grief and I have aches and pains all the time now.

So the solution is to get a new laptop ;-)

I haven’t done the research yet, but I came across this promising one

Toshiba 13 inch under 1kg laptop

not only is this one super light and comes with a ssd (see point 4), it also has a battery that according to them lasts longer and can be charged to 90% of capacity within 10 min.
According to rumours they will be available with Core i3, i5 or i7 CPUs

of course no idea of pricing yet, but hopefully we will see that soon.

7. Parrot AR.Drone

we have been talking about this a couple of times already here and here, but it definitely makes my list just because it is cool and I want it – hopefully they will release an android version so I can use it with my new Galaxy S :-)

This is it really. I am sure I have missed a few things, but I am also interested in what you have on your wish list for 2010 so please leave some comments below.

thanks
